Cajun Culture

Growing up, I did not always appreciate my Cajun heritage; in fact, I resented part of it. When my parents, aunts, and uncles spoke French, they were either telling secrets, or they were speaking to my grandmother whose English was very limited. When my father (pictured below) sang and played Cajun music, I enjoyed it as much as any child in the world. In my mind, my culture and experiences were the same as anyone else's. As a child, I also did not always enjoy Cajun cuisine.

Now as an adult, I understand my parents', aunts', and uncles' regrets, especially regarding Cajun-French, for not passing on more of our culture to us. My goal, as a result of this virtual field trip, is to contribute to the preservation of my heritage. Many people lack knowledge about the Cajun people, including a large number in Louisiana.

Through my efforts, I hope you learn something about Cajuns and enjoy your virtual field trip. Allow all of your senses to experience your tour. Like we Cajuns say, "Pass a good time on your trip!"
